Chapter 7

It seemed like the entire Madrugar police force, meager as it was, had descended on Claudio’s compound. Without a single vampire left intact, the only witnesses to what had happened were Javier, Gabriela, and I.

“So, what in God’s name happened here?” asked Chief Padilla, looking at me over his glasses.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I snapped.

Padilla pointed an accusatory finger in my face. “Your little trip to this house ended in the massacre of an entire compound of vampires, not to mention the prominent vampire community advocate. What did you do?”

Now I was pissed. “Oh, get real! You think I did this? Alone?”

“I was with Señora Barlowe the entire time,” said Javier. That was not entirely true. He and Gabriela had been separated from me after I left the library. “She could not have done this. It was Camazotz.”

Padilla frowned. “Did you see this Camazotz?”

“I saw it,” I said. “It even possessed Gabriela. It spoke through her.”

Padilla ignored me and remained focused on Javier. “Javier, did you see Camazotz?”

Javier looked down. “No, I didn’t. Not myself.”

Padilla turned his attention to me. “We found dozens of shell casings that match your firearm all throughout the house.”

“I was firing at Camazotz. I was trying to protect Claudio, not kill him.”

“That remains uncertain at this moment.”

“Listen, you saw the remains of Claudio yourself. He was torn to pieces.”

Padilla pointed at me. “You carry a silver machete, do you not?”

I unsheathed it and held it out to him. “Run tests. Not a single drop of blood touched this blade, living or undead.”

Padilla took it and handed it to an officer. He scribbled some notes on his pad and turned back to Javier. “How is it, again, you and the girl became separated from Señora Barlowe?”

Javier shrugged. “When she slipped through the secret door in the library, the door closed before I could join her. I had to keep the girl with me. I didn’t want her to fall behind.”

Padilla nodded as he paced back and forth. “Then what happened?”

“Then the girl…changed. She had eyes like a vampire. She attacked me. We wrestled for a bit. She hit my head and ran out of the room.”

Padilla glanced at Gabriela. Worn from her possession by a powerful cryptid, she slept curled up on one of Claudio’s couches in the great room.

“This is bad,” I said. “This was an attack on the recognized representative of the vampire nation. Someone wants to cause a war. Someone human.”

“That’s a definite possibility,” said Padilla.

“Who would want to do that?” asked Javier. “A war with the vampires would be suicide. United, the vampires would wipe us out. We don’t have half the slayer force the United States has.”

Padilla scratched the top of his head. “That’s true. So, you think a vampire was behind this?”

Javier nodded. “Seguro. Make it look like the humans struck first.”

“To what end, though?” I asked. “You heard Claudio. He had designs on greater representation in government.”

Padilla cast a sideways glance at me. “You sound like you’re on their side.
